Just found out. Always thought it was penned by Buddy Holly.
I was lucky enough to see Don perform this recently, and he talked about how it has a lot of significance for him because of that.
Many people have covered it over the years, but I think Don really blows them all out of the water with his usual emotional awareness.
I guess I really just appreciate McLean's artistic style that he puts on this classic.
