Review by Albert Nur

Live in Stockholm 1961 by John Coltrane featuring Eric Dolphy is an exceptional jazz album that captures the essence of two of the most influential saxophonists of the 20th century. The album presents a captivating performance that showcases the virtuosity and improvisational skills of Coltrane and Dolphy, who were at the peak of their musical careers during this period.

The album opens with "My Favorite Things," a classic Coltrane tune that features Dolphy's mesmerizing bass clarinet solo. The duo's interplay is evident throughout the album, with each musician taking turns to lead and follow. The album also features some of Coltrane's original compositions, such as "Impressions" and "Naima," which are performed with remarkable intensity and emotion.

The rhythm section, consisting of McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, and Elvin Jones on drums, provides a solid foundation for the two saxophonists to build on. The band's chemistry is palpable, and the audience's enthusiastic response is a testament to the group's musical prowess.

American saxophonist and jazz composer. Born: 23 September 1926 in Hamlet, North Carolina, USA. Died: 17 July 1967 in Huntington, Long Island, New York, USA (aged 40) from liver cancer. John Coltrane was one of the most influential musicians of the twentieth century. His early recordings capture a musician in the relatively conventional confines of bebop and hardbop, but his enduring legacy primarily rests on the modal jazz pioneered by his classic quartet (1960-64) and by free jazz explorations late in his career. He recorded more than fifty albums as a leader and appeared as a sideman on many other albums, performing with other giants of jazz like and . Coltrane received numerous awards including a posthumous "Special Citation" from the Pulitzer Prize Board in 2007 for his 'masterful improvisation, supreme musicianship and iconic centrality to the history of jazz'. As his life progressed, his music and outlook became increasingly spiritual. After his death he was proclaimed as a saint by the African Orthodox church that took his name. Coltrane's second wife was pianist ; their son is also a saxophonist.

This is my favorite song ever made. I also love this song when he played Newport Live. I love to take a puff of some blue dream and listen to this song walking around New York City. This song is the best therapy ever while walking NYC.

Top Recording. Though I think the Double Bass on this particular version at that period of time would've been played by Reggie Workman. Nevertheless, Heavenly..
